The importance of scheduling your Home based business working time.
Saturday, December 27th, 2008One of the main attractions of working at home is the concept of freedom — no clocking in, no time sheets to be filled in, and no one to account to for how you spend your time except yourself. Yes, it is an attractive proposition, but like so many attractive propositions there is downside it is entirely likely that you are wasting a lot of time.
My brother works in an office as a company accountant and he spends his work time every day filling out spreadsheets and balance sheets to account for his day. His day often encompasses work on a variety of accounts for different clients and keeping them up to date and chasing people for payments. Chasing money is a laborious task and often not a nice experience – that is why I look at the home business model. As the business took off, I realized there simply wasn’t enough hours in the day to accomplish all my goals, but at least I knew that I was going to get paid WITHOUT having to call up anyone to make sure that I received my money. The importance of a solid company with proven growth year on year is vital to your success and with my Home based business, I have that solid foundation to work with to ensure my success and reward for my efforts.
I found out the importance of having my own spread sheet and agenda for the day and I have improved my productivity and reduced my stress immeasurably. If you don’t think you need a schedule for your home business then think again. Read on -
After a spate of relatively unproductive days when my “To Do” list seemed to grow exponentially every time I looked at it I knew something had to change, so now I have a set schedule to work the hours every week I need to help my business to grow.
Granted, I have been going through a rough patch. My home business was experiencing growing pains and taking up more than the usual time, or so it seemed. My sons, who live with me and are young men (rather than boys) need prompting to help around the house rather than volunteering; my everyday business has been down because of the economic crisis we are going through and everything seems to be getting harder. Of course I know there is never a perfect time in life — you just live the one you’ve got and you have to make the best of it. These are simply the problems I’ve had to deal with this year. Next year these problems will be traded in for new fresh ones along with new challenges.
After spending lots of time adjusting my schedule, setting out ground rules for the household and chatting with some of my business partners including my enroller, I discovered five reasons to embrace the schedule for success:
- It’s too easy to spend too much time doing non-priority tasks
- It’s too easy to get sidetracked or distracted from your current task you need to set your work time aside and stick with it. If this is not possible due to circumstances on any given day, re-schedule and stick to it.
- Unscheduled work time can often overlap into your free time until you don’t have any free time at all
- Your free time can overlap into your work time until you fall behind with important projects
- Concentrating your time and effort on highest priority projects means more gets done make a list and work from the top priority first and then move on down your list
I’m not the only work at home business person who encompasses this type of schedule and basis for success, we all do in our line of business or it can become a real chore and nothing seems to get done. You must never forget that you are the one setting the schedule so you are free to schedule yourself off for a 3-hour lunch, an afternoon, or a whole day whenever you choose.
If you find it difficult setting up your schedule and priorities for the day and week then perhaps your spouse / partner, business partner (Sponsor or enroller) or even a friend can help you set your schedule. It is vital that you are not on your own so seek support wherever you can.
If, like me, you have a conventional business too, it is also vital to use your time to great effect in the beginning or at times when the growth of your business slows down. It will be worth it even more when you can experience more time freedom when your goals are achieved.
